Each of us has a story to tell about a teacher who made an impact. This is especially true for today\u2019s future teachers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">DVC students who would like to pursue a teaching career can get that same spark through the Teacher Preparation Pipeline (TPP). TPP offers tools and resources that help support future teachers. There is special interest in bringing people of color to the profession.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Resources for future teachers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Made possible by Strong Workforce funds through a Bay Area Community College Consortium Regional Joint Venture, the TPP project supports the Bay Area labor market demand for teachers. Urgent areas of focus include career education, STEM fields and special education,\u201d said Angela Bever, TPP Coordinator at DVC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Future teachers at DVC have access to resources and support, virtual events and workshops. They may also join the Future Educators Club.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cThe club offers options to network and share. Members gain insights from guest speakers as well. Joining the club enhances your profile for college admission and scholarships. You can also request letters of recommendation,\u201d said Bever.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">DVC classes for future teachers<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">EDUC 120 \u2013 Introduction to Teaching in Elementary Schools<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">GEOL 130 \u2013 Earth Science for Elementary School Teachers<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Math 125 \u2013 Mathematical Concepts for Elementary School Teachers<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-81 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/dvc.mycareerfocus.org\/spring-2021-volume-3-issue-2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/11\/Teach-for-the-Bay-Conference-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"Teach for the Bay Conference\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dvc.mycareerfocus.org\/spring-2021-volume-3-issue-2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/11\/Teach-for-the-Bay-Conference-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/dvc.mycareerfocus.org\/spring-2021-volume-3-issue-2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/11\/Teach-for-the-Bay-Conference.jpg 643w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/>In EDUC 120, students gain hands-on experience working with Bever\u2019s 3<sup>rd<\/sup> grade students at Shore Acres Elementary. Upon completion of the course, students earn 54 hours of early fieldwork experience. This experience can be used to apply to a credential program.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Teach for the Bay Virtual Conference<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">DVC recently participated in the Teach for the Bay Virtual Conference. The event was designed to attract students interested in learning more about careers in teaching. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/0B33GxLrNEY6MeWJiODJzUVlJdTdWeVhFdjZmd2xkaHh0TXpR\/view\">2019 Teacher Occupations Bay Region Report<\/a>, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">80 percent of school districts in California report teacher shortages.*<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cThere are jobs available. Many teachers retired last spring due to COVID. In the next five years, it is projected that there will be over 124,000 openings for California teachers every year,\u201d said Bever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">There is a particular need for bilingual Spanish teachers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cThere are more options for bilingual teachers, as well as more job security. I teach at Shore Acres Elementary, a dual language elementary school.
